Decorate with magnetic vinyl

The magnetic or magnetized vinyl It is a type of vinyl that has a black magnetic sheet on one of its sides and on the other we can write, print or apply glue and cover it with different materials. This kind of vinyl is widely used in the commercial field but it also has many possibilities in the decoration of our home. With a little creativity we can get a lot out of the magnetic vinylbeyond the typical refrigerator magnets.

Like other types of vinyl, magnetic vinyl is a flexible material that we can easily cut with scissors or a cutterIn fact, its texture and thickness is similar to that of EVA rubber. This feature makes it easy for us to make a multitude of shapes that can then be adhered to any metal surface.

Its price is quite cheap, the one I have used is 0.65 meters wide, you can buy the meters you need at Vinilosametros.com (9.30 euros per meter plus VAT). One of its advantages is that of magnetic vinyl you can take advantage of everything (like the pig), any small leftover pieces can be attached to another object (a button, a brooch, etc.) and we have another magnet.

Decorate a children’s room with magnetic vinyl

Magnetic vinyl can give a lot of play when decorating children’s rooms, both to make murals and educational games for children. For example, in the following image you can see a magnetic adhesive mural from the French brand Janod, which includes animal magnets for children to place on the mural and learn where each animal lives in the world.

Inspired by the previous idea, I have debuted with magnetic vinyl making a mural with photos for a baby room.

A wall of photos with magnetic vinyl

This mural with photos seemed like a good idea to decorate a baby’s room since you can easily change the photos, reposition them, add more or less, etc… We already know that babies change from one day to the next and this mural adapts to them at the same speed. In addition, magnets with children’s drawings, apart from decorating, are used to place notes or reminders: next visit to the pediatrician, last weight, date of the first tooth…

For the photos I have cut out several polaroid style frames and I have also printed some drawings on the vinyl.

What metal base of the mural I have used one of the shelves that I took from the mirror in the bedroom, but in general any metal base will work, you can even take advantage of a tray that we no longer use or paint any material with magnetic paint.

polaroid frames that I have made are for 10 x 15 cm photos but can be adjusted to any other photo size. To make them I have made a 10 x 15 cm rectangle and another inner rectangle on the magnetic vinyl, leaving a margin of 1.5 cm on the sides and on the top and 4 cm on the bottom.

To decorate the frame I used some stamped cardboard with various motifs that I bought this summer at Lidl, I have cut them like the magnetic vinyl and I have glued them with craft glue to the printable part of the vinyl (the one that is white).

If you don’t have patterned cardboard you can use any decorated paper, even gift wrap. It can also be decorated with washi tape, fabric scraps, paint or printed directly on the magnetic vinyl, which is what I have done with the rest of the magnets that adorn the board.

For this I have searched several children’s drawings related to the decoration of the room and I have printed them directly on the magnetic vinyl (because of the white face). To finish I have cut them with scissors and you can see the final result in the following image.

What I like most about this mural is that It is not only decorative but also quite practical. Thanks to the magnetic vinyl we can change the photos in less than a minute, we can even see the evolution of the baby by placing a photo of each month. Magnetic drawings are not only to make beautiful but also serve to place notes and reminders.

To make all these magnetized figures (photo frames and drawings) I only needed 25 cm of magnetic vinyl, which costs about 3 euros. Cheaper practically impossible! Especially if we compare it with the kits of this style that are already prepared.

what did you think of this children’s mural decorated with magnetic vinyl? It is an idea that can be adapted to other types of murals: family photos, photos from your last trip, etc. It is all a matter of using creativity to take advantage of the potential of this material.
