DIY decoration: a vintage corner

Surely you have a favorite corner in your house with some detail that makes it special. In my case it is in the kitchen, it is a totally DIY vintage corner that I have decorated by recycling different elements. In this way and with a very tight budget, I have achieved a unique and charming corner. Do you want to know how I have achieved it?

The DIY decoration It allows us to personalize and adapt any element to our tastes and needs. Doing it ourselves makes something standard our own, transforms a piece of furniture into YOUR piece of furniture. My corner is so special because I myself have managed to give a practical function to an area of the kitchen that was wasted, and with a low-cost decoration based on recycling.

At first the wall was completely empty and I wanted to use it to place a blackboard and my recipe books. Since I didn’t like the border too much, the first thing I did was paint it with special paint for tiles (in this link you will find a tile painting guide).

The shade of white of the paint and that of the tile were not the same (something predictable), it did not look bad but it did not convince me so I decided to make my own self-adhesive vinyl border (you can see the step by step of how to make a Decorative vinile in this link). In the following photo you can see that the glossy white of the vinyl is practically the same as that of the tile.

Another element that I wanted to introduce in the kitchen was a blackboard, so I covered a row of tiles with blackboard vinyl, in this way the blackboard had a decorative function as well as a practical one. The self adhesive vinyl It is an inexpensive material with many uses in DIY decoration. You can buy different types and models by the meter at this link.

The next thing I did was recycle a wooden box for Christmas batches and transform it into a bookcase. These types of boxes are usually unattractive since they are made with low quality wood, chipped and with imperfections, but with a little creativity we can radically transform them and take advantage of them. In the following image you can see the transformation of the box (in this link you will find the step by step):

I have recently changed the decoration of the box a bit. On the one hand, I have painted the interior with PINTYPLUS Forja spray in black (you can find it at this link), which has a beautiful matte tone and is very similar to that of slate paint. In this way, the bottom of the box merges with the slate vinyl on the wall, creating an effect of continuity that I love.

I have also eliminated the upper bar to have a greater depth in the mezzanine of the bookcase. On the other hand, as the plants did not adapt to the lighting in the area, I replaced them with recycled decorative objects: a couple of glass bottles turned into vases and an old restored coffee grinder.

In this link you have the tutorial of the bottle/vase on the left, for the one on the right I have followed the following steps:

1º.- I have applied a PINTYPLUS Gesso spray primer.

2º.- I have printed a vintage style label and I have stuck it with Modge Podge.

3º.- I have given a coat of homemade paint made with bicarbonate to provide texture and relief to the bottle (in this link you can see the recipe).

4º.- Once the paint is dry, I have passed a medium grain sandpaper all over the bottle to smooth the surface.

5º.- Finally I wrapped a rope around the neck of the bottle and finished it off with a small pendant.

To complete the decoration of the upper part of the bookcase, I have placed the old coffee grinder that I restored a few weeks ago (you can see the step by step in this link).
