Lately there are several of you who have asked me where do i buy the self-adhesive vinyl that I have used in the tunings that I have been doing during the last months, so I have decided to make this post to advise you where to buy it and how to get the best price.
To begin with, you should know that there are different types of self-adhesive vinyl. The vinyl that I have used to tune up doors and furniture is the one called lettering vinyl, which is made up of a sheet of PVC or polyurethane to which an adhesive has been applied on one of its faces (the side with the silicone paper).
This type of vinyl has a wide variety of finishes: it can be translucent or opaque with gloss, matt, metallic, patterned finishes (adhesive wood-colored vinyl, marble, patterned…), textured like carbon fiber or also with a blackboard or magnetic effect.
On the other hand, opaque vinyl has different qualities depending on the resistance of the vinyl to sunlight. This resistance is measured in years (normally 3, 5 or 7 years), so depending on the use that we are going to give it (interior, exterior, probability of scratches, etc.) it will be better to choose one or another quality. The vinyl that I have been using for my tuning has a resistance of 3 years.
Normally this kind of vinyl it can be bought in DIY centers and supermarkets, where they come in pre-cut rolls, although when we need many meters it is not very economical. In addition, there is usually not a wide variety of colors and textures in the rolls of self-adhesive vinyl that are sold in these types of centers.
It can also be purchased in the typical “Chinese” stores, although I advise against using this vinyl to tune up furniture since the quality is quite poor.. Come on, don’t even think about covering the kitchen doors with a Chinese vinyl, another thing is that you want to cover the bottom of a drawer, a box or to create your own decorative vinyl as in the following image, since for this The vinyl does not have to be of excellent quality.
Another option is Buy self-adhesive vinyl online. There are several distributors that sell vinyl by the meter, with a more advantageous price than that of the vinyl rolls that they sell in supermarkets. However, we must bear in mind that when buying online we will have to pay some shipping costs, so depending on the amount of vinyl that we are going to need, it will be more or less advantageous to buy it by the meter, it is all a matter of taking measures and doing numbers.
To tune up the kitchen and the closet doors, I bought the self-adhesive vinyl online, specifically at Vinilosametros, which is a serious distributor with quality products. There are other online stores that sell vinyl but they force you to buy a minimum number of meters and in most cases it doesn’t pay out, so I prefer to buy only the meters you need. In addition, you can pick up the order in store and save shipping costs.
To give you an idea, I bought online 3 meters of silver gray self adhesive vinyl for €33 shipping costs included and with it I lined the fridge (two sides and front door), the entire kitchen plinth (4 meters long) and I still had a little left over. A roll of the same type of vinyl in any DIY center already costs around 20 or 25 euros and you need a minimum of 2 to cover a fridge.
As I have already told you before, depending on the amount of self-adhesive vinyl that you are going to need and where you are going to place it, it will be convenient for you to buy it in one place or another. If you need a very small quantity, it will surely be cheaper to buy it by rolls in a large area, or if what you want is to make a small decorative silhouette, an inexpensive vinyl will suffice, but if you are going to cover a piece of furniture or some doors, it is best Buy the vinyl by the meter since it is usually more advantageous and it is also of higher quality.
