A piece of furniture or a door can change radically just by renewing the handles or knobs. On many occasions it is not necessary to replace them to change their appearance, with a facelift we can give those we already have a second chance. Nor is it necessary to spend a fortune since we can make them ourselves or use recycled elements to replace them. One way or another, you will surely find inspiration with these 5 DIY ideas to renew drawer and door handles.

1st.- Bring some shooters to life by decorating them

A DIY trick to spice up a handle without changing it is to decorate it. In the following image you can see one of the bedside tables that I have in our bedroom. I didn’t dislike the small aluminum-colored handle, but after eight years it was crying out for me to give it a new look.

Being small did not allow me to decorate it internally, but I could do it externally, for this I made a decorative border with self-adhesive vinyl stainless steel effect (In this link you can see how to make your own decorative vinyl). The handle is the same but the decoration around it has completely changed the look of the bedside table. Best of all, if I get bored again in a few years, I just have to take off the border and that’s it.

2nd.- If you can’t find the handles you want, make them yourself

when i decided recycle a bookcase by adding some doors and transform it into a cabinet for the bathroom (you can see the before and after in this link), I was doubting which handle I was going to place, since the ones that I liked, in addition to seeming expensive, did not fit the measurements that I needed.

On many occasions, when you can’t find what you want, it’s best do it yourself, so I bought some aluminum profiles, cut them with a jigsaw to the size I needed and adhered them to the edge of the doors with two-component epoxy glue. In this way I got four custom handles for the same price as a standard one that didn’t even fit me.

3ยช.- Recycling a broken belt

There are many elements that we can recycle to use as drawer and door handles, such as ropes, corks, old keys or a broken belt as in this case.

In the transformation of this chest of drawers (you can see the step by step in this link), I decided to take advantage of a belt that had been broken by the buckle to cut it into three pieces and make the drawer handles. Recycling will always be the cheapest possible solution to renew drawer and door handles and give them a unique and personal touch.

4th.- From knob to handle without drilling new holes

I’ve always liked handles more than knobs for kitchen doors, but I didn’t want to drill new holes in the wood in case I changed them again in a few years.

So it occurred to me that I could put the upper part of the handle in the hole that was already made and in the lower part (where there was no hole), place double sided tape. In this way, if the screw on the upper part is tightened well and the lower part of the handle is fixed with the self-adhesive tape, it will be fixed without the need to make another hole.

Instead of double-sided self-adhesive tape, glue can also be used, but it will be more expensive to remove when we want to change the handle (although it could be achieved with a solvent).

5th.- Radical change with paint and self-adhesive vinyl

When I pimped this bedside table (you can see the step by step in this link), what they asked me the most was where I had bought those knobs. Hardly anyone believed me when I said they were the same ones I already had.

In the following image you can see how some yellowish plastic knobs over the years became beautiful and original knobs thanks to a coat of spray paint and decorative vinyl. Who said sequels were never good? On many occasions it is worth giving a second chance to the objects that we already have, for very little the change can be surprising.
