7 useful tips for storing clothes from one season to another

Autumn begins next week and although it is not very noticeable here yet, it does seem that it has reached other parts of the peninsula with force. As not all of us are lucky enough to have a dressing room with enough capacity to store all our hanging clothes, when these dates arrive, there is no choice but to organize and store clothes that are no longer in season.

Those of you who read me regularly already know that I am a fairly organized person, in fact a few months ago I already gave you some tips to make better use of space (you can see it HERE) and also to store the footwear (you can see it HERE), That’s why I’m going to give you 7 tips to store clothes from one season to another.

1.- Store clothes in boxes, baskets, covers…

First of all you have to know where are we going to store the clothes (drawers, mezzanines, under the bed…) and depending on the location, choose the most suitable box, basket or container. For this, it is best to take the measurements and find the box that best fits them to make the most of the space. For example, if our loft is 55 cm deep, the ideal would be to find a box that has the same depth, or if we are going to store clothes under the bed, the most appropriate are boxes with wheels to be able to remove them easily.

If the box is very large, you can divide it inside to better distribute the space, a cardboard will suffice to do it (you can cover it with a nice paper to make it more decorative).

2.- Save the clothes that you are going to use again

It seems obvious but at the moment of truth there is clothes that we keep one season after another without actually putting them on. It’s the clothes of the “if…«: in case it becomes fashionable again, in case I lose weight, in case I gain weight, in case I fix it… and so on all the «if» that occur to you. For example, it does not make sense to save six pairs of pants in case you gain weight or lose weight, since surely in that case what you will want is to buy new clothes.

It is true that it is difficult to get rid of this type of clothing (it is also difficult for me), but we have to limit it and reduce it only to what is worth it (new and good quality garments), to recycle or give away the rest. In this way we will get have more space and better store the clothes that we are more likely to use again.

3.- Store clothes by type of garment

Organize and store clothes by garment type It makes it easier to find it, especially for the new season, since it is very effective for knowing if you have a T-shirt of that color that is going to be worn so much or for quickly finding a specific item of clothing.

For this, the ideal is distribute the clothes you are going to store in several boxes, indicating the type of garment on the outside. If, for example, you only have a couple of skirts, you do not need to dedicate a box exclusively for them, you can place them together with another block of garments as long as you indicate it on the outside to facilitate their location.

4.- Make an outline of where you have stored the clothes

Maybe you have enough attics to store everything that is not in season, but this is not always the case and you have to distribute it through the different cabinets in the house or even in the storage room. In these cases, you should do a small sketch of where you have stored your clothes, something like: trouser box in loft hall closet, T-shirt box under bed in bedroom, etc.

You may think that it is not necessary, that you have a prodigious memory and you will remember where you have stored everything, but in the end the months go by and there always comes that moment of “I swear I had kept it here…”.

In addition, this scheme is going to come in handy for those little summers that usually happen in spring or when it suddenly cools down, from one day to the next, since you will be able to locate any garment in a moment.

5.- Fold clothes correctly before putting them away

It is clear that when we take the clothes out of the boxes again, we will have to iron them, but a small wrinkle is not the same as it being like an accordion (the ironing time is considerably reduced in the first case). For this reason it is advisable to fold the clothes correctly before putting them away since in this way we will avoid ironing more than necessary when we take it out again.

Also if we fold the clothes correctly we will optimize the spacesomething that surely we do not have left over, being able to store more garments in the same box or drawer than if we do it in a disorderly way and piling it up.

6.- Check the clothes before putting them away

Before putting the clothes away, check that they have no stains, rips, snags, etc. If you have any stains, you must remove them before storing the garment, otherwise, it can be fixed to the fabric over the months and will be much more difficult to remove.

Also think that if you inadvertently store a garment with a snag or damage that cannot be fixed, you are taking space from another garment, so it is preferable to spend a little time reviewing it before putting it away.

7.- Avoid bad odors

A homemade trick for store clothes and protect them from moisture and mold consists of placing inside the boxes where we are going to keep it cloth bags with bicarbonate inside. Baking soda has a great deodorizing effect and absorbs moistureIt is also economical and ecological.

Another trick that I have inherited from my mother is put a bar of soap in the box where we are going to store the clothes. In this way we will ensure that it has a pleasant aroma when we take it out of the boxes again.

Have you already put away this season’s clothes or are you thinking of doing so? I hope these 7 tips for storing clothes from one season to another you find them useful and make this cumbersome task more bearable. Have a nice weekend 😉
