Geometric heart with textile vinyl to decorate a cushion

What I like most about creative challenges is that I have to put my neurons to work to produce new ideas or reinvent old ones. On this occasion, the Challenge of the month of Papelísimo consisted of making a geometric heart with triangles, so it occurred to me do it with textile vinyl to decorate a cushion and renew it.

I have a weakness for geometric prints, and now they are very fashionable in decoration, so when I saw that Papelísimo proposed us to make a geometric heart I was very clear that I was going to make the triangles that make it up out of textile vinyl.

If you follow my blog you will already know that it is not the first time that I use textile vinyl to decorate cushions, In fact, I chose geometric motifs to give life to some neutral and bland cushions (you can see it at this link), then I animated myself with a monochrome silhouette and letters (you can see it here) and also with some children’s robots that combined different colors (you can see it at this link).

Taking advantage of the fact that I still had a lot of material left from my previous tunings, I decided to try something different: apply the textile vinyl on a printed fabric instead of doing it on a smooth one as he had done until now.

The flower print cover in the picture above must be about 8 or 9 years old. When I bought it I really liked the combination of turquoise and beige tones, however everything gets tired over time and I wanted to update it.

Combining a floral print with a geometric print is a risky proposal, but if we use the same range of colors, an original result with a lot of personality can be achieved.

In this specific case, the first step was to make a pattern with paper triangles to see the effect on the cover and decide the size of the heart. I wanted it to be large enough to stand out, but not overly hide the base fabric to create contrast between the two types of print.

Next, I chose four colors of textile vinyl similar to those used in the pattern of the cover and made 6 beige triangles, 6 light blue, 4 blue and 4 cream.

The next step was to fix the textile vinyl triangles to the fabric with the iron. When I finished making the triangle puzzle, I highlighted the outline of the heart by bordering it with a decorated brown ribbon that I glued with textile glue.

you can see the step by step tutorial on how to apply textile vinyl on fabric at this link.

Now all that was left was to put the padding on the cover to have a completely renewed cushion, you see that only a small DIY detail is necessary to make something produced as standard unique. In this case the geometric heart gives a 3D effect to the floral print that makes it unique and very original.

The advantage of textile vinyl compared to other materials when decorating on fabric is that its application does not require any special tool, it is enough to have scissors to cut it and a domestic iron to fix it.

Provides a solid, opaque color that completely covers the base fabric. It can be washed without the risk of fading or transfers to the rest of the fabric.

In addition, with textile vinyl we can add a personal touch to fabrics for the home and clothing without the need to know how to sew.
