Would you like to give your bedroom a new air without spending much and making better use of the space? With small DIY works you will be able to make changes that will have a great impact on your decoration. Do not miss this first part with some of the keys to update the bedroom and make it much brighter and more practical.
The bedroom is the place in our home where we relax, rest and recharge our batteries. Renewing its decoration so that it is more current and practical will contribute to improving our comfort. For this reason, and since it had already been 5 years since the last update, I decided that the time had come to make some changes. To do this, in this first phase I have focused on providing light and making better use of the space, as you will see in the following video tutorial.
Renovating with wallpaper
For years the painted paper It has been strongly imposed when it comes to decorating and covering our walls. When I wallpapered the wall at the head of the bed for the first time, I chose a dark wallpaper that would make an impact and contrast with the white of the furniture. However, I had already tired of it and wanted to renew it for a brighter one. For this reason, I chose a brick wall textured wallpaper in white and grey. The steps I followed were the following:
- Remove old wallpaper and prepare wall for new wallpaper.
- Apply a primer on the wall with CX-02 Colbaix Vynil, which is a ready-to-use transparent finishing glue that can be applied to plaster, stucco, plaster… It is also indicated for gluing heavy wallpaper (vinyl) such as the one I was going to use.
- Once the primer has dried, apply the glue to the wallpaper and place it on the wall.
As an additional trick, I recommend always leaving a margin at the top to remove it with the help of a spatula and a cutter. On the other hand, the joints between the sheets of paper will be less noticeable if you go over the sides by introducing glue with a small brush and pressing with a dry cloth.
improving the lighting
The bedroom lighting It is another important aspect to take into account since sleeping, reading or dressing have different light needs. In this case, it had general lighting on the ceiling and another spot on each side of the headboard, although it was insufficient for reading in bed, for example. For this reason, I decided to install the linkable LED strip model Larisa by Simon Brico, which has the following advantages:
- It is special to place under furniture and includes the cable for its connection, as well as supports and screws.
- Provides neutral white lighting that makes reading easier on the eyes
- You can link up to a maximum of 10 power strips, although personally I only needed four
- Each strip can be turned on and off independently to have more or less light according to our needs.
For its installation, I built a custom module with pine wood made up of three boards joined in a “U” shape, so that it fit perfectly and is attached to the hole behind the headboard.
gain storage space
Normally, the bedrooms are not usually very large, so any space that we can take advantage of, no matter how small, will make us gain storage space. Shelves with little depth and that can be hung on the wall are suitable for this. The Tomado model shelf by Metaltex not only fulfilled these characteristics, but also fit perfectly with the decoration of the bedroom.
On the other hand, it is modular and you can add as many shelves as needed. Its installation is very simple since you just have to screw the sides to the wall and place the shelves at the height that best suits us. In this case I have used it to keep my accessories organized and to hang my jewelry.
White as the main color
we all know that white will make your bedroom look bigger and brighter. The light furniture gives the feeling of occupying less and the ceiling and walls of the same color makes them visually distance. In my case I wanted to give it the maximum prominence in this first phase of the bedroom update. However, in the second phase of updating the bedroom, I will play with more daring colors and textures that will give this room more personality.
