paint a wall with hexagons [Paso a Paso + Vídeo Tutorial]

If you like minimalist interiors, but don’t want them to look bland and boring, just play with geometry. This tutorial will show you how to paint a wall with hexagons to give life to any room in your home. Do not miss all the keys to make it perfect.

In interior design, hexagonal shapes help to visually highlight any room in a balanced and natural way. They are ideal for decorations with a retro or Nordic style. However, they also add personality and character to minimalist rooms with few furniture and accessories. For this reason, it was the geometric shape that I chose to decorate one of the walls of the guest room.

In general, I don’t like to overload spaces and our guest room is an example. It contains few pieces of furniture, among them there is a wardrobe inside which there is a pull-down bed. In addition, it needed to renew the paint due to the typical friction that occurs over time.

Lime paint with graphene

To repaint the room I used Ecosphere Premium which is an ecological and sustainable lime paint. In addition, it contains graphene, which is a substance made up of pure carbon that gives the paint enough hardness and resistance for everyday use.

Repainting and decoration process

The following video tutorial shows the entire process of repainting and decorating the wall:

Ultimately, these steps summarize the process:

  1. Protect the surface you don’t want painted with protective paper and rice paper tape.
  2. Dilute the paint by pouring 10/15% water. Stir until smooth.
  3. Apply a first layer and wait between 2 and 4 hours to apply the second (I did it after 4 hours).
  4. The manufacturer recommends waiting 24 hours for complete drying, although I did it halfway before applying rice paper tape and decorating with hexagons.

Advantages of lime paint with graphene

It was the first time I used this type of paint and I liked it a lot for these reasons:

  • It hardly has a smell, in fact I was painting most of the time with the window closed and even then it was hardly noticeable. Also, I’m asthmatic and my chest gets quite heavy with certain types of paints, especially at night. This did not happen to me despite having painted without a mask.
  • It is very covering. The first coat of white paint practically concealed the existing differences in tone after having putty the holes. With the second hand it was perfect. In the case of the two colors used, it was enough to apply a single coat over the base white.
  • White is very bright, I just love it. On the other hand, both the Diamante and Calima colors have an intense hue, but at the same time soft. The combination of both seems perfect to me.

Keys to paint perfect hexagons

I will not fool you, painting the wall with hexagons takes time and patience. For this reason it is essential to do it correctly. In the following video tutorial you can see the whole step by step:

Create a cardboard template

Create one template of a hexagon with cardboard It is very simple:

  1. Draw a hexagon on a cardboard box. To make a perfect hexagon you just have to look for an image on the internet, trace it on the cardboard and cut it with a cutter, for example.
  2. To hold the stencil against the wall, attach a ring of rice paper tape.
  3. Alternatively, use a level to make sure the template is straight before wrapping the rice paper tape around it.

Rice paper tape for perfect lines

I have been using the washi or rice paper tape de Miarco to draw perfect lines. With it you avoid unpleasant surprises when different colors are combined, since it prevents the paint from seeping underneath.

When it comes to placing it and obtaining a professional result, you just have to follow these steps:

  1. Make sure the paint has dried before applying the tape.
  2. Place the tape and press your finger on the edges of the tape.
  3. Apply the paint, but discharge most of it onto the surface before painting over the tape.
  4. Remove the tape when the paint is still wet.

When removing all the tape from the wall, you can see that the lines have been straight and without transfers between some colors and others.

paint a wall with hexagons

The truth is that I liked how the wall turned out so much after painting it with hexagons that it has not only rewarded me for the hours invested, but I am also rethinking changing the location of the furniture to leave the wall bare.

The combination of gray and yellow gives the room just the right touch to enrich the decoration, but without falling into excesses, don’t you think?
