Ikea Magiker, Godmorgon and a spray

Once upon an old woman ikea magiker bookcase who lived in a bathroom that was going to be renovated. After the reform it seemed that it was not going to have a place in it since it was out of tune with its new environment but…. who said second chances were never good?

Despite the years, the bookcase was in good condition and had a lot of capacity, much more than the bathroom column Godmorgon (double to be exact) that matched the vanity unit we had bought. But of course, the birch-colored Ikea Magiker bookcase was a piece of cake with the white, gray and turquoise colors of the new bathroom, so neither short nor lazy I said to myself “why don’t I paint it?” and the next thing I remember is my pilgrimage through the DIY centers in my area looking for THE COLOR.

It wasn’t easy, I didn’t find any glitter nail polish, not even close, so the next step was the internet, that mixed bag where you can find everything, and I found it! Not exactly the same but very similar: mtn hardcore spray 2 christiania blue.

This spray with a glossy finish and high coverage seemed to me to be a good option to give it that turquoise touch that would make the bookcase harmonize with the new decoration of the bathroom. At first I bought a bottle to test the color and seeing that the result was very similar, I decided to buy as many others to be able to paint the entire shelf (I needed 3 spray bottles in total).

never had spray painted and the truth is that it was not difficult for me (I will explain it in detail in the Step by Step), but what really brought me to my head is the dust that is assembled and that gets from all sides.

Once the entire structure was spray-painted (except the back, which I painted with white enamel) and the shelves were placed, the bookcase already looked different.

Still, what I wanted was a bathroom column, with doors and a large capacity in which to store a lot of things hidden from prying eyes. Taking into account that the bookcase had been discontinued for several years, the only option left for me was to make them to measure.

There are DIY centers that will cut melamine boards for you for free, so I bought enough to make four doors 31cm wide by 94cm long and spray painted them.

The next step was to look for a hinge without a cup (rim hinges) that is screwed to both sides of the door and, once closed, causes the same effect as the cup but without the need to make any hole to fit it.

As a shooter I chose some anodized aluminum profiles, very similar to the drawer handles of the turquoise Godmorgon washbasin cabinet. To fix the handles to the door I used epoxy adhesive since it is resistant to humidity and heat that is usually present in bathrooms.

The profiles were “L” shaped, with one side of 3 mm and another of 2 mm. The length was 1 meter but it can be easily cut with a jigsaw to fit the 94 cm of the door.

Once the doors and handles were placed, the result was similar to a Gordmorgon Armal double but at a cost of a third of the price of a single.

And what I liked the most… with lots of interior storage space!!!

In this photo you can see the bookcase inside the bathroom, which was perfect after the renovation.
