Spanish guide to learn how to assemble furniture

do you know the Drill Guide for Kreg Jig R3 Assembly? For me it has been a real discovery when it comes to building my own furniture. If you want to know what this practical tool is and how to use it, you just have to read this practical guide.

The Kreg Jig R3 guide allows you assemble furniture with hidden screws creating precise, resistant and invisible joints. In fact, the union of different pieces of wood with hidden screws is a system that the Egyptians invented. They made a hole at an angle between two pieces and inserted wooden falcas that they fixed with animal and vegetable glues.

I have to admit that at first I had to do some tests to get the point, but with a little practice it is easier and faster than other systems. For example:

  • When assembling a piece of furniture with dowels or wooden dowels, you have to be very precise so that the pieces fit perfectly.
  • With angle brackets, you run the risk of them not being strong enough and bending.
  • If the pieces are screwed with the screws visible, the final finish is not as aesthetic.

For all these reasons, this assembly guide is a very interesting option when joining pieces of wood between 12 and 38 mm thick. If you are interested in buying it, you will find a good price at this link.

What does the Kreg Jig R3 kit contain?

The kit is presented in a small box that allows you to keep everything stored when you are not using it. In addition, the box contains a scale so that you can adjust the stop of the bit, although it is in inches. For this reason, my advice is to stick a guide table inside the box with the conversion from inches to millimeters.

The parts included inside the box are:

  • Template with the drilling guides. This template has some holes to screw to the piece you want to drill. It also has an adapter to hold the template with clamps.
  • Sliders to adjust the template according to the thickness of the board to be drilled.
  • Stepped drill bit for drilling.
  • Ring or stop to adjust the drill and control the depth of the hole that we are going to make.
  • Allen key to fix the stop of the bit.
  • Square end screw driver bit.
  • Screws of different sizes and wooden plugs to hide the holes.

How is the Kreg Jig R3 guide used?

In the next video-tutorial I explain how this assembly kit works:

In summary:

  1. Adjust the slider on the template to the thickness of the board so that the screw joins the pieces in the center.
  2. Place the stop on the drill according to the thickness of the board, taking into account that the edge of the board does not have to be drilled.
  3. Clamp the jig as well as the board to a stable place like a workbench.
  4. Insert the drill bit into the drill guides and drill the holes.
  5. Fix with sergeants the two pieces that you want to join.
  6. Screw in with the square bit.

Concealed Assembly Screw Types

The kreg screws They have special characteristics that make them ideal when using this hidden assembly system.

  • It has two types of screws: fine and coarse thread. The fine thread ones are ideal for hard woods such as ash, oak, maple, birch or hickory. The fine thread ones are best suited for softer woods such as pine, cedar, fir, plywood, melamine, and MDF.
  • The square head allows for easy screwing. The square bit fits perfectly and makes it easy to turn the screw. In this way, the drawing is prevented from being stripped or lost, as can happen with star head screws.
  • Its tip allows the screw to be threaded like a drill bit, without splitting the wood and without the need to drill a pilot hole.
  • It contains a smooth part under the head that allows the screw to be easily turned to achieve a firm and tight joint between parts.
  • The bottom of the screw head is flat, fitting snugly against the edge of the widest part of the hole.

Without a doubt, you are wondering if only this type of screw can be used and the answer is that in principle yes. I have tried it with star head screws and the union has also been carried out correctly and resistantly. What I can no longer guarantee is that in the long run they are as durable as Kreg screws.

Wooden plugs to hide the holes

If the holes are in a hidden part of the furniture (inside drawers or at the bottom), it is not necessary to cover them. If, on the contrary, they are visible, you can use some wood plugs cut at an angle to hide them.

These plugs are inserted into the holes and fixed with carpenter’s glue. Once they have dried, the excess part will be cut with a Japanese saw and sanded to level the surface.

My advice is to only hide them when necessary for aesthetics. If they are not covered, you can always disassemble the furniture or change/tighten a screw if we see that it becomes loose or deteriorates over time.
