Drill bits for DIY, selection of special drill bits for DIY

Brocas para bricolaje selección especial - destacada

Normally we are used to using the typical drill bits for wood, for iron, and for construction materials, mainly. In fact, recently we have published several articles whose content is precisely this. However, we have not talked about the everyday bits that we all know, but we have made several selections with the bits less used, but whose usefulness is widely proven.

Well, today we go further. In this article we have made a special selection of drill bits for DIY, with the collaboration of Bosch, and that will be, as we say, exclusively focused on “special” bits.

Special selection of drill bits for DIY

We are in the fourth and final installment of our saga of articles dedicated to drill bits. Next we will see some of the special bits that can be used the most in DIY. Specifically there are six.

For the tough tests that we will carry out, we will use a spectacular power tool, the Bosch Uneo Maxx drill.

At the end of the article, we include a video that contains both the information collected in this post, and the tests carried out. Do not miss it, it is worth seeing.

Well, we are already fully with the first of the six DIY bits for special uses.

conical countersink

We will start with the conical countersink. It has a hexagonal shank, which makes it possible to use it by mounting the drill bit both in the standard tool holder and directly to the drill axis using the sds-quick system.

As can be seen in the video, it is made up of seven 90º cutting edges.

Specifically, this countersink is indicated for non-ferrous materials, such as aluminium, wood and plastics.

Before continuing, we will clarify for those who do not know, that the countersinks are used to countersink the heads of the screws, leaving them flush with the surface.

The tests that we have carried out, we have carried out on a 5 mm thick aluminum plate, and on solid wood, specifically sapely, whose hardness is medium-high.

Countersinks require a hole before or after the countersink, through which the screw or lag bolt must pass, going through the material so that the head is embedded.

The truth is that the cut it makes has been clean and smooth in both materials.

This countersink is not intended for use on steel. However, precisely for this, we have the HSS conical countersink that we will see next.

HSS Taper Countersink, Straight Shank

The HSS taper countersink is apparently very similar to the above, but has some important differences.

To begin with, this one has a cylindrical shank, so it has to be mounted in the standard chuck.

On the other hand, it has five cutting edges, instead of seven as the previous one had.

The uses for which it is indicated, like the previous one, are for non-ferrous metals, wood, and plastics. But in addition, it also has a steel hazelnut. And in what way!

We have carried out several tests on different materials. On the one hand, we have done it on some hard plastic material, such as methacrylate. Drill performance was good. Just as we expected.

However, our great surprise was when testing it on a 7 mm thick steel plate. It unwrapped smoothly, precisely and steadily. If I had to describe it in one word, I would say that it has had a superb response.

On the other hand, after the tests, the cutting edges were still intact, without the slightest sign of deterioration.

Twist drill for wood with countersink

Well, after this pleasant surprise, we will move on to the twist drill for wood with a built-in countersink.

It is indicated for natural wood, derivatives of wood and any type of wood, whatever its hardness, and whether they are coated or not.

In reality, this drill is made up of two main parts and a third auxiliary part.

The two main parts are, the wood drill bit and the conical countersink but, on this occasion, it has a hole in the center, in which the drill bit is located. This can be adjusted in height, sliding inside it. And finally, the auxiliary piece is a screw that fixes both pieces together, configuring a single cutting tool.

We have tested it on solid sapele wood, obtaining a very satisfactory result. It is a very stable bit, with which you work smoothly, and which provides very, very clean finishes.

With this drill, drilling and countersinking is done in a single operation, thus saving time.

step drill

Let’s move on to a drill bit that you may not have seen before. It is somewhat more peculiar than the previous ones, but very very practical. This is the step drill.

It has a hexagonal shank for quick mounting sds-quick.

It is indicated for practically any material, such as aluminium, steel sheets, plastic, or stainless steel, among others. The only condition is that the material to be drilled must be fine. Plates type.

DIY step drill.

This last condition is not because the drill lacks enough power to drill thicker pieces, but because the result we would obtain would be something similar to a countersink, instead of a simple drilling, which is the purpose of this drill.

Another of its advantages is that it is not necessary to carry out previous perforation. In addition, it does not leave burrs on thin sheets.

But the main advantage of this tool is that with a single bit, we can drill different diameters, depending on what we sink it into the material. The deeper you go, the larger the diameter of the drill.

The range of diameters that it drills, specifically the drill we have tested, goes from 4 to 20 mm.

HSS router bit

Another of the DIY drill bits that we have included in our special selection, due to its great utility and versatility, is the HSS router bit.

It is a rectified bit, with a drill point, and with cutting teeth embedded throughout and all around it.

In reality, it is a mixture of a drill and a file, its use being precisely to make recesses in different materials.

We have carried out tests with this drill bit with wood, methacrylate and aluminum.

In the video you can see the tests done with a 3 mm thick aluminum plate.

With the hand drill, it works fine. But if we want to get even more out of it, we must mount it on a column drill since, in this way, we will be able to exert greater lateral pressure, accelerating the roughing process, in addition to obtaining much more precise results.

CYL-9 Multi-Purpose Drill

Well, we come to the last of our selection of “special” type DIY drill bits. This is the CYL-9 multi-purpose drill bit.

Apparently normal although, when we tell you the uses it has, you will be stunned. But first, I will tell you a little about the technical characteristics of this drill bit.

  • I will tell you that it is made of hard metal.
  • Which, in addition, has an active centering tip.
  • That the cutting edges have been diamond ground.
  • It has AWB welding and hardening technology, which increases its robustness and reduces vibrations during drilling.
  • Special grinding allows multi-purpose drilling.

All of which lengthens its useful life and provides it with maximum resistance capacity.

If in the drills that we have seen previously, we advised you to watch the video of the tests carried out, in the case of the multipurpose drill, it is mandatory that you watch it. Only seeing it can you believe what I tell you next.

We must bear in mind that we have drilled very different materials, and many of them are very hard. However, the bit has performed better than excellent, both with and without percussion.

Tests performed

The tests have been carried out on the following materials:

  • 3mm thick steel.
  • 5mm thick aluminium.
  • Solid sapele wood.
  • Plaster.
  • 18mm thick methacrylate.
  • Brick, with and without percussion.
  • Concrete.
  • Masonry.
  • Tiles, also with and without percussion.

With the steel, it has cost him a little more, however, he has behaved well. However, with the rest of the materials she has literally gone “too much”.

I had not tried this bit before, but I am not exaggerating when I say that it has left me shocked.

The behavior that has been shown with any of the materials has been SUPERB (with capital letters).

Impressive!!, really.

I invite you again not to miss the video, which you have just below this line.

Conclusions

Throughout these four articles, with their respective videos, we have seen our selections of drill bits for wood, for metals, Construction materials Y special bits. In total we have tested more than twenty bits, with very different uses and characteristics.

Below are the links to the other three selections of bits mentioned.

Many of them have been specifically designed for certain jobs and materials. And they are usually used in more “serious” jobs.

If I had to choose, among all of them, a few to equip a basic toolbox…

BEWARE, I said BASIC toolbox, that is, the one that can be found in any normal and ordinary home or, as they say, a “walking around the house” toolbox.

After trying this last one, the multipurpose CYL-9, I think I would only stick with this one. I would get a set of various diameters and I would have 99.9% of my needs covered, since it drills practically any material, as has been shown.
