Today we will talk and learn more about wood drill bits, their different classes and uses.

There is a lot of information regarding the electric drill. In fact, we have published a monographic article on the electric drill, in which we talk about the different parts that make it up, as well as the benefits and minimum technical characteristics that, in our opinion, this tool should have for a level DIY enthusiast. medium.

As we say, if we do a search on Google, we can find everything. From technical characteristics, comparisons between different products, to the ways of using and maintaining the tool. For something, the drill is the “king of DIY”.

However, the content that we have created and that we publish today is dedicated to some accessories without which the drill would be of little use.

We are referring to the bits. Therefore, we will talk about the different classes and types of drill bits, as well as the uses for which each of them is intended.

Selection of Bosch bits for DIY.

There are many types and variants on the market. However, we will tell you about the ones that can be most useful to us in DIY. With the help of Bosch, we have selected more than twenty different bits.

As we say, this selection is more than enough as far as DIY is concerned.

In order not to lengthen the article too much, we have divided the content into four parts.

To keep a certain order and try not to get lost, we have organized all these bits into four groups:

  1. On the one hand we have carpentry drill bits, specific for woodworking.
  2. Another, with drill bits for construction materials.
  3. For metals.
  4. And finally, the bits that, for some reason, we have considered special.

Therefore, this is the first installment dedicated to drill bits, in which we will only deal with drill bits for wood.

Video of the tests carried out

As usual, we like to personally test the tools we talk about. Only in this way can we speak with knowledge of the facts.

Well, in the video that we include below, we collect the tests that we have carried out with the drill bits for wood, together with the Bosch Uneo drill.

drill bits for wood

On many occasions, at least I have used bits for metals, to drill into wood. Although I have achieved my purpose, to drill, the result is not entirely optimal. For this, there are wood drill bits, specifically designed to work this material.

Standard Wood Twist Drill

Standard twist drill

First of all, we have the standard twist drill. This bit has a centering tip, which prevents it from moving at the start of the drill, making great precision possible.

On the other hand, it is extremely sharp for precision drilling without edge chipping.

It is suitable for both soft and hard woods.

Router bit for wood

Then we have the router bit. It has a centering tip, in addition to two main cutting edges and two lateral ones, which, like the previous one, prevents splintering. Providing completely clean holes, as you can see in the video that accompanies this article.

It is suitable for working hard, soft, and plywood.

spiral drill bit

spiral drill bit

This bit gets its name from the very pronounced spiral shape.

Its design and geometry provides a clean cut, a rapid drilling progress, and also a rapid evacuation of the chips produced during the drilling process.

This type of drill is often used to make through holes.

Drills through all types of wood, even wet wood.

Self Cut Speed Flat Router Bit

Flat milling machine.

Flat router bit, also called spade bit.

This one has a small big difference with respect to the standard type that we can find in the market. If we compare them, the latter is completely flat, compared to the Bosch Self Cut Speed, which pays much more attention to the geometry looking for the maximum optimization of the drill. It achieves this by giving a slight concave shape to each wing of the blade.

This optimization of its ergonomics, together with the self-drilling tip that it incorporates, makes it possible to drill ten times faster than the standard drill.

It is indicated for wood, as well as for drilling light construction materials, such as plasterboard or plaster.

Adjustable Flat Router Bit

Adjustable flat bit.

A more sophisticated variant of the previous one is the adjustable flat router bit.

The one we use in the video, specifically, drills holes from 15 mm to 45 mm. Although there are also other ranges.

It consists of a main body that incorporates a centering and self-drilling tip at the same time, and two mobile blades that are calibrated in mm, which are mounted to the desired size and are immobilized by means of the screw that incorporates the drill.

The way it pierces is something unique: with the tip of the blade, it traces the outside of the circumference. And with the self-piercing tip, it cuts and lifts the fiber from the entire interior. This form of drilling guarantees completely clean edges without splinters.

It is suitable for drilling soft wood, hard wood and light construction materials.

Wood drill bit with M point

The special spiral shape of the body, as well as the “M” shape of the tip, provides fast chip evacuation as well as precise, chip-free drilling.

Hinge Box Drill Bit

Drill for cup hinges.

Finally, we have the hinge box bit. It is suitable for practically all types of wood, whether soft, hard, stratified, boards derived from wood, such as MDF or chipboard, plastic-coated boards, melamine, among others.

They are especially suitable for drilling boxes to embed cup hinges. This type of hinges are the most used in kitchen and bathroom furniture.

Although the correct use of this bit is mounting it on a column drill, taking more care than usual, it can also be used with a manual drill.
