eva rubber mobile cover

There are fewer and fewer days left for Christmas and surely more than one and more than one is missing a gift to make. Thinking about them this week I wanted to make a EVA mobile phone case as a DIY gift for Christmas since, in addition to being simple, it can be done in a short time.

To make this cover I have chosen an owl-shaped template, although it is a design that can be adapted to another animal or character. On the other hand, although initially it is a mobile or smartphone case, it is also possible to make it for a tablet or an electronic book reader by modifying the measurements.

The materials that we will need are the following:

– Plates of eva rubber or foamy, I have used blue, white and black.

fabric tape or self-adhesive decorative tape with different patterns and colors.

– Scissors, automatic clasp, needle and thread.

– Optional: self-adhesive vinyl for tracing.

The eva rubber sheets They can be bought in Chinese stores and in craft stores, an A4 size sheet for a mobile phone case or an A3 size sheet for a tablet case will suffice. If you don’t want to buy another sheet of EVA foam for the eyes, they can be painted with acrylic paint, marker, etc.

On the other hand, this mobile phone case could also be made with felt, but I prefer to make it with EVA rubber because it better absorbs shocks if we drop the phone.

The truth is that I have almost lost count of the things I have done with 2 packs of 3 rolls of washi tape: I covered the base of a felt poinsettia, decorated a magnetic whiteboard and also a cardboard box to wrap some pins felt. I still have some tape left, so I’m sure I’ll still get a lot of use out of it.

Once we have all the materials we must follow the following steps.

1º.- Measure the mobile phone or tablet

It’s very important measure the width, height and thickness of the mobile phone to adapt the case to the phone or other device. In this week’s newsletter I will include the template that I used to make the case for an iPhone 4S, if you are a subscriber you will receive it in your email and if not, you can subscribe for free at this link.

To obtain the dimensions of the cover, add the width plus the thickness, add a 1 cm margin and round off; in the same way to the height you have to add the thickness and add 1 cm. For example, an iPhone 4S has the following measurements: 5.86 cm wide, 11.52 cm high, 0.93 cm thick, so the case will be 8 cm wide (5.86 + 0.93 + 1 = 7.79 cm rounded to 8 cm) and 14 cm high (11.52 + 0.93 + 1 = 13.45 cm rounded).

2º.- Trace the template and cut

For trace the template and not to leave marks on the eva rubber I have used self-adhesive vinyl (you can see how to do it in this link).

When cutting, as I always tell you, straight lines are best cut with normal scissors, while for small details and rounded shapes it is preferable to use curved scissors.

3º.- Decorate with fabric tape

The fabric tape or self-adhesive decorative fabric tape is the ideal complement for lining the cover because it adheres perfectly to the EVA foam and also adapts to its flexible texture.

When we have cut the different parts of the cover, the first thing we will do is sew the eyes to the front part (the one that does not have wings), then we will decorate from the middle down with fabric tapes of different patterns.

With the back of the cover we will do the same but decorate it from the top of the wings down (not including the legs).

Once we have the two parts of the cover ahead, we will also line the inside.

4º.- Join the two parts of the cover

The last step will consist of joining both parts of the cover, for this the sides and the bottom are sewn with scalloped stitch. The protruding parts that cannot be sewn with satin stitch (wings and legs) I have sewn with a topstitch.

To finish we will sew an automatic brooch at each end of the wings.

The automatic clasp is so that we can open and close the wings, in this way it will serve as a support for wrap headphone cord.

After all these steps and in a few hours we have managed to make an original mobile phone case out of eva rubber.

5º.- Gift wrapping

To wrap this gift I have only used kraft paper and some colored ribbons since, being a small package, it should not be overloaded. The truth is that of the gifts that I have wrapped so far this has been the simplest and the one that I liked the most.

What do you think of this new DIY gift idea for Christmas? Although initially this eva mobile phone case in the shape of an owl It is designed for a girl, its design can be adapted to be able to give to boys as well. I leave you some examples so that you can see that, taking this idea as a base, many different models can be made.
