how to decorate glass and wood with decoupage

Decoupage is a technique that can be applied to various materials: wood, cardboard, metal, fabric, glass, etc. With this tutorial you will learn the keys to decorate with decoupage glass and woodgiving a personalized style to the decoration of your home.

A few days ago I bought a centerpiece that was reduced to half price. Although it seemed a bit bland at first, I liked the rustic touch of the rope handles.

The truth is that I don’t usually have a very good hand when it comes to making flower arrangements or decorative arrangements, so I chose to focus on exterior decoration using the decoupage technique. For this I used the following materials:

decopatch paper. This type of paper has a very good print quality and its glossy appearance makes the support appear painted after it is placed. It adapts perfectly to all types of surfaces and is resistant despite being very thin, making it easy to handle.
glue for decoupage. The advantage of this glue over other types of adhesives is that it is used both to fix and to varnish our works decorated with this technique.
sponge brush. I especially like it for decoupage because with adhesives it is easier for the brushes to lose bristles (something impossible with foam ones), and it can spoil our work if there is any hair under the paper or on it. They also spread the tail more evenly and without leaving marks.
Burlap and lace fabric ribbon. I bought it a long time ago to make a fabric topiary and now it came in handy as it is the same color as the rope on the handles.
Stones and decorative glass. He also had them at home for a long time, in addition to white and blue to match the print on the paper.
– Candles, satin ribbon, scissors, sandpaper.

How to decorate with wood decoupage

This tray is ideal for beginners in the decoupage technique for two reasons:

1st.- It is already painted.
2nd.- Its surface is smooth.

When decorating with decoupage, it can be done directly on the wooden support or previously painted white. Some papers used for decoupage, such as paper napkins or rice paper, are semi-transparent. If these types of papers are adhered without first painting the wood, it is very likely that the grain and knots of the wood will show through or that the colors of the paper will appear dull.

For this reason, in most cases I usually paint the wooden or MDF support white before decorating with decoupagein this way I make sure that the final result will be identical to the paper I am using.

To adhere the paper I used glue for decoupage, which is usually a little thicker than other glues and also serves to varnish and protect the final result. On the other hand, when varnishing, make sure that the paper is perfectly adhered, otherwise it could wrinkle.

Regarding the placement of the paper, I recommend cutting a long strip to surround the tray. If the paper is not long enough to cover all the sides (it will be most likely), I do not recommend that the two pieces of paper be joined at the corners, but rather at one of the sides. This prevents the paper from coming unstuck from the edges, since it is an area with greater wear.

On the other hand, it is convenient that we use a spatula to smooth the paper, but never directly on it, but placing a plastic or baking paper on top to prevent it from tearing.

How to decorate with glass decoupage

Like the tray, this glass container is also ideal for decorating with decoupage as it does not contain reliefs. In addition to being square and not rounded, the placement of the paper is very simple.

On this occasion I have adhered the decoupage paper directly on the glass, without painting or priming. Normally when decorating with glass decoupage It will be necessary to take into account if the glass is transparent or tinted and the use that is going to be given to it.. For example, decorating a glass bottle with decoupage is not the same as decorating a table with a glass top. In the latter case, the glass must be primed to ensure good adherence of the glue.

On the other hand, the application on glass is usually similar to the application on wood, taking into account that you have to spread the glue well since a very thick layer could damage the paper by softening it.

To decorate the glass container I placed a strip of paper at the bottom, followed by a strip of burlap fabric adorned with lace and a turquoise blue satin ribbon. In the upper part you can see the stones with which I have filled the container.

The decoration of the two jars is in keeping with both the paper and the handles of the tray.

What did you think of the idea of decorate with decoupage glass and wood? I am quite satisfied with the result, especially taking into account that I consider myself a no-no when it comes to decorating centerpieces. In this way I have not only managed to personalize it, but I have also given it a little more life with colors that I love.
