Do you want to take advantage of that corner to place a desk but you do not have a plug to connect your devices? This tutorial will teach you how to install a plug without works. In this way you can provide greater functionality to your home.
The lack of plugs is usually a fairly common problem in any home. On many occasions, we consider a change of distribution but we reject the idea due to lack of plugs. This step by step will show you how to get an extra connection for your electrical appliances.
In my particular case, I installed a small folding table to take advantage of a corner of the office. Although it was perfect to place a laptop, I soon found myself missing an outlet to connect the charger or an auxiliary light.
Materials to install a plug without works
To install a socket without works, it is necessary that there be another socket in the room. It will serve to connect and provide electricity to the new one.
In addition, you will need the following materials:
- Double surface socket outlet with cover. It is convenient to choose a base that does not protrude too much from the wall. In this way it is avoided that it can bother when placing a piece of furniture in front of it.
- Cord with plug. You can take advantage of the cable of an extension cord, for example.
- Thief-plug.
- Cutter.
- wire stripper
- A couple of pieces of wire.
- Gutter (optional).
You will find all these materials in any hardware store or DIY center.
Precautions when installing a socket
Any electrical work carries some danger if not done safely. For this reason, when we install a plug or carry out any electrical installation in general, we must take into account a series of basic precautions:
- It is necessary to cut the electrical current of the whole house before starting any task.
- The material we use must be approved and have all the necessary guarantees.
- It is convenient to use insulating gloves and mittens for electrical work.
- Greater care must be taken in the bathroom and in the kitchen, as these are areas where water can damage the installation.
- The power of the electrical devices that are connected to the network must be in accordance with the contracted voltage. Otherwise, the plug may be burned or the electrical installation damaged.
Steps to install a plug without works
First of all, there needs to be another socket in the room . It does not matter that it is on a different wall, although you must bear in mind that the cable will go outside. To hide it you can place a gutter or be inspired by any of the ingenious ideas that you will see in this link.
Connect with another plug
In my case, the nearest plug was a few meters away but behind a bookstore. For this reason, the first thing I did was drill the bookcase to pass the cable with a plug that I was going to connect to the plug.
I also made a hole in the socket base to pass the other end of the cable (the one without a plug).
After following these steps, the plug end of the cord will be plugged into the existing outlet. The other end (the one with the wires in the air), will be the one that connects to the new plug.
On the other hand, it is convenient to place a thief in the existing plug and use it to connect other electrical appliances.
Connect the cables to the base
Socket outlets come with a small electric scheme. This diagram is the one to follow to connect the cables correctly.
Once we have disassembled the base, the power outlet must be removed from the plug inside the mechanism (in the image the two black and yellow pieces). In my case, as the base is double, there are two power outlets.
Next, the cables are stripped with the cable stripper and connected to the socket following the diagram provided.
In this way, it will have been possible to provide electrical current to the new plug.
Mount the outlet box on the wall
After making the connections, the box will be screwed to the wall. To do this, the holes where the screws go will be marked and the corresponding holes will be made with the drill.
Once the base has been screwed on, the sockets that had previously been connected to the cables will be inserted and the cover will be placed.
After all these steps we will have the new plug installed and fully operational.
Now I can say that I have a fully functional auxiliary work area.
