Thanks to this tutorial you will learn how recycle a wine box and decorate it to turn it into an organizer of accessories and complements.

Wine boxes are ideal as containers to store all kinds of objects. They are usually made from unattractive pieces of wood that have knots and blemishes, as well as brand prints and logos, making them ideal for decorating.

I have personally recycled several boxes of this type, you can see several examples in how to recycle a wine box in a jewelry box or how to recycle a wine box in a breakfast tray.

In addition, the hairdresser that I usually go to has become an improvised “collection point” for wine boxes and wooden boxes in general that clients leave to give them a second life. Normally I have “carte blanche” to decorate them as I want, although for me it is a double responsibility since it is not only about doing a good job, but also about matching the tastes of the owner of the box.

In the following image you can see what the wine box looked like before we started decorating it:

Inside it had a couple of dividing boards so it occurred to me that I could recycle the wine box as a accessories and complements organizer box: scarves, belts, socks, etc.

Step by step to decorate and recycle a wine box

The wood of this type of box is usually quite rough and has imperfections, for this reason I always recommend sand the surface regardless of the type of painting or decorative technique to be used. This prevents the objects stored inside from being damaged.

To sand, follow these steps:

– Give a first pass with medium grit sandpaper (between 80 and 120).
– Give the second pass with fine grit sandpaper (between 240 and 280).
– Always follow the direction of the wood grain.
– Remove traces of dust with a damp and well-wrung cloth.

On the other hand, it is also convenient that you eliminate any lace or staple that protrudes both for your own good, and to prevent any object from snagging or tearing.

After sanding I proceeded to paint the box. The fact that these types of boxes are marketed with untreated wood and that we have previously sanded it, will ensure a good grip for both water-based and synthetic paints. I usually go for water-based paints, such as chalk paint and water-based enamels, since they dry quickly and don’t have as intense an odor as synthetic ones.

This time I painted the outside of the box with mint green chalk spray paint.

Next I decorated the box with paper. The paper could have been placed directly on the box without painting, but taking into account that there are very thin papers such as napkins or rice paper, I prefer to paint beforehand since it also helps the glue to grip better.

For the lid of the box I used a wrapping paper with geometric patterns that combined shades of gold, green, gray and copper.

For the outer edge I chose a napkin decorated with small triangles in shades similar to those of the wrapping paper.

Summarizing…

If you want recycle a wine box and you don’t know how to decorate it, in this short summary you will find all the steps:

1º.- Sand the wood and remove the nails and staples that protrude in order to obtain a smooth surface.
2º.- Paint all or part of the wood, depending on the thickness and transparency of the paper that is going to be used to cover it. Another option is to combine stained wood and paper.
3º.- Paste the paper with glue for decoupage or adhesive for crafts. Keep in mind that the more liquid the adhesive, the more likely it is that the paper will wrinkle.
4º.- After 24 hours, protect with varnish. Spray varnishes are highly recommended for this type of work as they prevent the formation of wrinkles with the varnish.
5º.- Place a label to be able to identify what is inside the box without having to open it.
