Surely over the years you have been accumulating porcelain cups from different sources. Perhaps some of them have lost the charm they had in their day, either because their design is out of fashion or because you have grown tired of it. It is also likely that you have advertising mugs or without any decoration. In all these cases, did you know that you can recycle porcelain cups decorating them with washi tape to give them a second chance?

I had been thinking for some time what I could do to recycle porcelain cups that I have in my closet, I had considered several options such as painting them in different colors with acrylic paint or homemade chalk paint, but finally I thought of decorate them with washi tape and protect them with a vitrifiable varnish.

Decorated adhesive tapes or washi tape They have the advantage that they have a multitude of designs that, combined with each other, give rise to very creative compositions. However, as they are made of paper, we must use some type of varnish to protect them if we want to preserve them from moisture. The Vitrifiable varnish It is a varnish that crystallizes with heat, forming a waterproof film that makes it possible to wash the washi tape without fear of damaging it.

Therefore, to recycle porcelain cups by decorating them with washi tape, materials that we will need are the following:

washi-tape of different reasons. I have used both colored washi tape (a box that comes with ten different colors) and also decorated with motifs.

Vitrifiable glue varnish of Lefranc. It is normally used to decorate tableware with decoupage and make it resistant to moisture.

Paintbrush and masking tape to apply the varnish and protect the areas that you do not want to varnish.

– A cutter to cut off excess washi tape.

The porcelain cups that you can use are all those whose design or decoration you no longer like. I have used both already decorated cups whose design was boring to see, as propaganda cups or without any type of decoration. In all cases, you must make sure that the washi tape will completely cover the design and that it will not show through, otherwise you can apply several layers of decorative tape until the motif is no longer visible.

Next with a cutter cut the excess part of washi tape around the handle. To guide me and cut straight I used masking tape.

After the part of the cup that is not decorated with washi tape is protected with masking tape and that we are not interested in varnishing since it has its own layer of enamel.

With a brush we will apply the vitrifiable varnish taking care not to soak the decorative tape too much to avoid wrinkles.

Finally, we will introduce the cup in the oven at 150 degrees for about 20 minutes, although it will depend on the oven. In any case, if we see that the varnish begins to yellow, it is because we have overdone it over time. The heat will make the varnish crystallize and protect the washi tape from moisture, allowing the cup to be washed normally. In fact, I washed it 48 hours later without any problem.

With other cups the steps I took were the same, in the following images you can see more examples of before and after decorating the cups with washi tape.
