Today we are going to make an original children’s decorative mural, which we have personalized with the girl’s name.

These types of decorative details look great in birthday celebrations, communions, all kinds of theme parties and even as decoration for a room. childish.

In our case it is the decoration for the celebration of a communion.

We could have done it differently, but we have opted for a rustic style, since all the decoration will revolve around the equestrian world.

Alternative methods to make the decorative mural

Actually, we have considered two different ways of doing it.

Option 1

Using the decapé technique. This method is longer and more complex. It is necessary to apply two layers of paint, leaving the drying time between them, to later carry out the stripping. And that’s counting on the effect we were looking for coming out.

2nd option

However, we have opted for a much less elaborate method, but whose result is impressive. It’s about the wallpaper.

Wallpapering the decorative mural

1st Step. Prepare the adhesive

Well, the first thing is to prepare the adhesive. You can find the glue for wallpaper, well prepared to apply, or in powder to prepare. The truth is that there is a difference in price from one to the other, and the preparation has no science, you just have to mix it with water following the instructions on the package. Therefore, we have opted for the latter.

Once we have the glue well homogeneous and without lumps, let it rest a bit.

Meanwhile, we will take the opportunity to prepare both the paper that we will use, and the support on which we will place it. In our case, it will be on a wooden panel.

2nd Step. Applying the adhesive

Before applying the glue, we will stir it again a little. And, with a brush, we apply it on the back of the paper, from the center to the ends.

We apply generously, but without going overboard.

Once the glue is applied to all the paper, we have to leave between 5 and 10 minutes, no more, so that the paper properly absorbs the glue and experiences the expansion that it will then maintain when it dries.

To avoid, during these minutes, that the ends dry out more than necessary, we will fold the two edges towards the center.

3rd Step. sticking the paper

Well, now we place the paper very carefully, and we are laying it down carefully from the center to the edges, with the help of a wallpaper brush.

As in our case, it is a small surface, we will use a new sweeping brush.

We are passing it carefully and without leaving bubbles.

If you see that you have not placed it as you wanted, nothing happens. You carefully remove it, and put it back.

Now comes the most difficult part, we have to turn the wooden panel, so that the edges are also wallpapered.

Once turned around, we also paper the back.

Adjusting the corners during gluing

Although the back was not seen, it is convenient to wallpaper both sides. In this way, the possible expansions and contractions that the adhesive will suffer during drying, with changes in temperature, are counteracted, thus preventing the wood from warping over time.

Well, once the paper is placed, we let it dry.

Customizing the decorative mural

The children’s decorative mural will be personalized with the name. As the decoration will be horse themed, we are going to do it with rope.

1st Step. dyeing the rope

So that the rope, which is light, stands out against the background, we are going to tint it in a dark color. For example wenge color.

For this we will use deco-lasur from Cedria.

Cedria is a brand specialized in all kinds of stains and varnishes. They have a huge variety of colors, both for interiors and exteriors, as well as special treatments for wood.

Later we will talk about the products of this brand, and we will tell you how to apply the lasur correctly.

Well, we stir the lasur well, without shaking it. It is important to avoid shaking it, so that bubbles do not occur.

With the help of a brush, we thoroughly soak the rope, which we have previously calculated more or less the necessary length.

Once we have finished applying the product, let it dry.

2nd Step. Adapting the decorative mural to hang it

Once the wallpaper is placed and dry, we will adapt it to later hang it.

To do this, and as we seek to give it a rustic style, we will use some shackles. The installation of these fittings is as simple as drilling holes in the wall, removing the threaded part, and inserting them.

3rd Step. tracing the name

While the rope dries, we will mark with pencil the path of the name on our mural.

With a cutter and scissors we cut out, in the center, the letters of the template that we have made on the computer. In this way, we can mark the layout of the letters on the panel.

4th Step. “Writing” the name

Once the rope is dry, we have to fix it on the mural, giving it the desired shape. To do this, we will use the thermo-adhesive gun.

This adhesive is very useful for this type of crafts, as it cools very quickly, in a few seconds. And when it cools down, the pieces stick together.
