It had been parked for several months. renovation of this table and its chairs because I was lazy to paint them, so when Handbox gave me the Novasol Spray Craftlover Challenge, I thought I had no excuses to give them a much more up-to-date look with their Chalk product line.
Normally, when you want to paint a piece of furniture, you have to take a series of steps that are the same as the ones I followed when I painted my wardrobe doors (you can see the step-by-step at this link):
– Sand.
– Apply a layer of primer, wait for it to dry and sand again.
– On some occasions it is necessary to give a second coat of primer for total coverage with its corresponding sanding.
– Apply a layer of paint, wait for it to dry and pass a fine sandpaper.
– Give a second coat of paint and sand.
If we add the time it takes to paint with the drying and sanding times, it can take several hours (or days) from when we start the task of painting a piece of furniture until we finish it. For this reason, on many occasions, laziness overcame me and I ended up postponing this renewal time and time again.
Before: an old-fashioned table and chairs
In the following image you can see what the table was like, in a classic style but somewhat outdated.
Just thinking about having to sand down the rounded shapes on the foot of the table after each primer and coat of paint made me want to renovate it.
Painting the chair was also quite labor intensive due to the ribbed shape of the backrest.
The steps to renovate with renovating furniture with spray chalk paint
My intention was to teleport this set to the current time through the shabby chic styleFor this, the first thing I did was clean both pieces with alcohol to remove dust and other products. Subsequently I assessed if I was going to need primer (you can refer to this primer guide). In principle, chalk paint does not require a prior primer, but if the surface is varnished or very shiny, it may be necessary, especially if it is a piece of furniture that is going to be exposed to continuous wear. To carry out this check, I always recommend testing the paint on an inconspicuous part of the furniture and waiting a minimum of 24 hours. If the paint can be easily scratched with a fingernail, a prior primer will be necessary.
In this case, the spray chalk paint adhered well to the table but the chairs had a very glossy varnish that required sanding to remove or priming. If you want a quick result without brush or roller marks (and without subsequent sanding), I recommend using a spray primer.
Below you can see how the foot of the table turned out after painting it with mint green spray chalk paint.
In just 15 minutes it was fully painted and in half an hour it had dried. How much time would it have taken if I had to sand, prime, dry, sand, paint, dry, sand, paint, dry and sand? Well, probably a whole day.
The next step was to paint the tabletop, for this I first gave it a layer of glacé brown chalk spray paint. Next, to give it an appearance similar to that of wood, I applied a layer of walnut-colored wood stain (in this link you have a tutorial to imitate wood with chalk paint), and finally I gave it a couple of layers of wax, also in walnut color. .
For the chair I chose the same mint green color that I had used for the foot of the table. In this case, between painting and drying, approximately one hour passed.
I waited for the chair to be painted to choose the fabric with which I was going to upholster it, since in this way I could see which was the one that best combined it according to its style and color.
Finally, I recommend protecting the paint with wax, wood oil or water-based spray varnish, depending on whether we want a more or less satin finish.
A shabby chic table and chair
Below you can see the final result. Who would say that this pair of furniture is between 20 and 30 years old? Surely you could find very similar ones in any shabby chic decoration store.
