Sanitary acetic silicone, characteristics and applications

silicona acetica sanitaria - destacada

You cannot imagine the immense variety of silicones that exist. There are silicones for a lot of different applications, with different properties and characteristics.

Keep reading because below I will tell you everything you need to know about a specific silicone for many domestic applications.

With this article, I bring you from INDEX to Perfect Fixing its wide range of chemical products: silicones, adhesives, chemicals and foams, which we will be seeing throughout different articles and videos.

INDEX is a professional manufacturer of mechanical and chemical fixing anchors. Today I will talk to you about acetic silicone.

Therefore, the material that we will be publishing is essential for all DIY enthusiasts. So you shouldn’t miss it.

Well, for this article I have selected a silicone that, although it is aimed at a multitude of uses in the domestic sphere, is specially designed for areas with constant humidity.

It’s about the sanitary acetic siliconewhich is available in white and transparent.

It also has fungicidal properties, which prevents the appearance of mold and, therefore, its blackening, which is very common in humid environments.

Advice

Always choose approved products. In addition to being a guarantee of product quality, they guarantee an optimal result and greater durability.

Likewise, the price difference that may exist is minimal or even non-existent.

Applications of sanitary acetic silicone

Now we will see the main applications for which sanitary acetic silicone is especially indicated.

  • Sealing of expansion joints exposed to moisture.
  • Sealing of elements in bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Assembly of glazing on aluminum frames.
  • And PVC joints, varnished wood, ceramic surfaces, aluminum, and in general materials that are NOT porous, oxidizable, or attackable by acids. For these last materials, we would have to go to other types of silicones.

Characteristics of sanitary acetic silicone

Below I will tell you about some of the main characteristics of Index’s acetic-based multipurpose sanitary silicone.

  • It is easy to apply. Its texture is somewhat more fluid than other silicones, so it penetrates more and better into the joints that we seal. However, it remains firm and does not sag in vertical applications. Which, from the outset, are already two points in his favor.
  • As I said before, it prevents the formation of mold.
  • It does not discolor as it is resistant to ultraviolet rays.
  • It has excellent resistance to ageing.
  • Excellent adhesion to non-porous materials.
  • It is indicated for both interior and exterior use.
  • Resists a wide variety of chemicals.
  • It is resistant to extreme weather conditions. Keep in mind that its service temperature ranges from -40º to 150ºC.

I could go on, but I think this is enough to give us an idea of the type of product in question. However, I invite you to take a look at the technical data sheet for Index’s sanitary acetic silicone.

Well, with all that said, it’s time to put it to the test.

How to remove bad odors from a toilet

To do this, we are going to seal the joint at the foot of a toilet, which is leaking.

When we talk about leaks, we normally think of a problem of water and humidity. However, this time the leaks are odors, bad odors.

Well, silicone also solves these types of unpleasant problems.

Guide to sanitary acetic silicone

Before continuing, I leave you this video in which, in addition to talking about this silicone, I explain why a toilet can produce bad odors, and I show you how to solve it.

step by step procedure

When we have this problem of odors in the bathroom, they are usually caused by the toilet, and the reason is because the joint between the toilet and the drain is not well sealed.

What is the function of a toilet?

The drain is a PVC pipe about 6cm in diameter.

The toilet collector does not go in a straight line towards said drain, but rather makes a kind of serpentine, forming what is called siphonic pot.

The latter, as it is always plugged with water, prevents odors from coming out of the downspout.

Therefore, the bad smell does not come from inside, but from the joint between the foot of the toilet and the floor.

Therefore, this is the area that we have to seal, leaving it completely watertight, and this is what we are going to do.

1st Step – Prepare the meeting

The first thing we must do is clean the area to be sealed well, so that the silicone penetrates and adheres correctly. For this, we will use a robust scraper or a similar tool, pulling out and removing all the material that we can from the previous seal. Next we pass a wire brush.

Once this is done, we remove all the remains with a vacuum cleaner. And we delimit the entire area with bodybuilder tape.

2nd Step – Prepare the sanitary acetic silicone

We open the silicone cartridge, cutting its threaded end.

We put the mouthpiece.

We cut the latter diagonally, taking into account that the width of the cut must correspond to the width of the joint to be sealed.

And we mount the cartridge in the applicator gun.

3rd Step – Sealing the joint

The application must be done by sliding the nozzle along the joint. Only in this way will the silicone penetrate properly.

On the other hand, we must apply the product in excess, without leaving any weakened area.

It is very important to completely seal the entire contour, even in areas that are difficult to access. Keep in mind that if you leave even a small area unsealed, you will continue to have an odor problem.

Once the application is complete, we remove the excess silicone. To make this operation easier and cleaner, we spray the entire area with soapy water.

We are removing the excess silicone, while pressing against the joint. And trying to leave it as curious as possible.

We can do this perfectly with our finger, but without forgetting to soap it from time to time.

Immediately, we remove the masking tape. We must consult the minimum curing time on the packaging.

And we pass the soapy finger again, but this time, more gently. In this way, we will have an impeccable seal.

We have already solved our problem.

Various considerations

In the application that I have just made, I have observed something that has caught my attention.

In my long experience as a DIYer, I have used many types and brands of silicones. Normally, sanitary acetic silicones give off a super strong acidic odor during application, which lasts for 1 or 2 days. A smell that is not pleasant at all.

However, this silicone practically does not give off any odor during its application. And once it is finished, it leaves no trace of smell.
