Small&LowCost: DIY String Lights

DIY string lights

Last weekend the Christmas lights were turned on in many cities and towns, and it is that in all self-respecting Christmas decorations this type of luminous decorations cannot be missing. With this DIY string lights you will add a magical touch to the decoration of your home this Christmas.

The other day I bought some LED lights to decorate my improvised Christmas tree but as you can see in the following image they were nothing special, when they were turned off they went completely unnoticed and when I turned them on you could just see some luminous points.

Since I wanted them to be a little more decorative when they were off and when they were on, I thought I could “dress them up” in some way to make them more lively while also providing a personal touch. For this I made some 3D diamonds like the ones in the following image (download the template in the Printables sectionaccess by clicking on this link):

The materials that we will need to make these 3D diamonds with which to decorate our DIY string of lights are the following:

colored cardboardin this way we add a touch of color to the lights when they are on.
Gold vinyl and chrome vinyl or mirror effect (you can get it here). Covering cardboard and cardboard with self-adhesive vinyl is easier than it seems, by covering the cardboard with gold or chrome vinyl we provide a metallic touch to the diamonds. Another option is to use metallized cardboard but normally they are only on one side, the other is usually not colored, so they are not as decorative when the garland is on.
ScissorsI recommend a pair of nail scissors to cut out small details like the little stars.
hot glue gun.

Once we have all the materials steps to follow are the following:

1º.- Print the template directly on the cardboard or trace it.
2º.- Cut out the template.
3º.- Cover the side of the cardboard that is not printed with the self-adhesive vinyl.
4º.- With the help of a ruler, fold the cardboard along the stitched area.
5º.- With the hot melt glue gun, glue the tabs to mount the diamond.

Once all the 3D diamonds are assembled, all we have to do is pass the cable of the LED lights through the little stars until they are all hooked.

Now we have a DIY string of lights that won’t go unnoticed when it’s off or when it’s on and there’s natural light.

Also when the room is dark the garland takes on its “magical” look as the stars reflect off the wall.
