Painting perfect lines is not as easy as it seems, especially if the surface is not completely smooth, such as a wall with gotelé, since on many occasions there are transfers from one color to another. You will see how with this trick to paint perfect lines it won’t happen to you again.
When we paint a surface with two different colors, be it a wall or a piece of furniture, the most common is to apply masking tape to create a dividing line. Even if we fix the tape correctly, sometimes color transfers from one area to another (also called “bleeding”). To avoid it, try this trick to paint perfect lines, you will be surprised with the result.
Case 1: Trick to paint perfect lines with two colors
maybe you want paint a wall or piece of furniture with two or more different colors. If that is your case, the steps you have to follow are the following:
1º.- First, paint the surface with the lightest color and let it dry completely. As an example I have partially painted a vanilla colored wooden board.
2º.- Then place the masking tape in the place where you want to divide the two colors.
3º.- Paint again with the lighter color (in this case the vanilla colour), on the part of the masking tape that will mark the division between both colors (right side of the tape in the example).
In this way, what is achieved is that the gaps that may be under the bodybuilder’s tape are filled so that there is no transfer of the other color.
4º.- Once the paint on the bodybuilder’s tape has dried, it is painted with the new color (in this case blue) on the area of the tape previously painted in vanilla.
5º.- Finally, the bodybuilder tape is removed. It is very important that the tape is removed before the last coat of paint has dried.otherwise you could lift it.
After completely removing the tape you can see that the division between both colors is perfect.

Case 2: Trick to paint perfect lines with one color
Perhaps you just want to paint a color over an existing onesuch as when you paint the wall but not the ceiling or when you want to leave a certain area of a piece of furniture unpainted so that the wood can be seen.

In these cases, the steps to follow vary a little from the previous one:
1º.- Position the bodybuilder’s tape and place carpenter’s glue on the part of the tape that will mark the division between both colors (in the example it is the left side).
2º.- Next, pass a spatula over the bodybuilder’s tape to remove the excess glue and fix the side correctly. Once the excess is removed, you can secure the joint by running your finger along the edge.
With the carpenter’s glue, the gaps that may be under the bodybuilder’s tape are filled. In addition, as once it dries it is transparent, it is not noticeable on the old color.
3º.- Wait a few minutes for the carpenter’s glue to dry and paint with the color you want (in this case blue).
4º.- Remove the masking tape before the paint has dried.
As in the previous case, the result is impeccable.
Summarizing…
If you are going to paint with two different colors, the trick to getting perfect lines is to first paint over the masking tape with the base color. When it has dried, the necessary hands will be given with the second color.
In the event that you want to paint over an existing color, what you should do is place carpenter’s glue on the bodybuilder’s tape, remove the excess by pressing with a spatula and paint with the chosen color.
Finally, we must bear in mind that if we are going to give several hands, all these steps indicated above will always be applied on the last layer of paint. That is, if two coats of the first color are necessary, the masking tape will be painted with the same base color after the second coat. Likewise, if two coats of the second color are required, the masking tape will be removed when the second coat is wet.
