These are some of the advantages that, more or less, we all know. However, during the last two months, two news items have been published echoing two scientific investigations in which it is concluded that DIY and gardening directly influence health:

  • Reducing heart risk.
  • Reducing the risk of stroke.
  • Providing good eye health, from the point of view of prevention.

Today we want to share with you these two recent and fantastic news, including them in full below.

DIY and gardening reduce the risk of stroke by 30%

The practice of DIY or gardening can reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke and prolong life by up to 30 percent in the age group over 60, according to research published in the online edition of ‘ British Journal of Sports Medicine’. According to the authors, these routine activities are just as good as exercise.

These scientists base their results on the analysis of almost 4,000 individuals aged 60 in Stockholm, Sweden, whose cardiovascular health was followed for around 12.5 years. At the beginning of the study, the participants underwent a medical check-up, with information on lifestyle, diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity and the way they were.

Participants were asked how often they did a range of activities of daily living, such as gardening, DIY, car maintenance and picking blackberries in the previous 12 months, as well as whether they had done any exercise formal. His cardiovascular health was monitored with lab tests and physical exams to look at blood fats and sugar and blood clotting factor, high levels of which are linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

At the start of the research, those with active daily lives generally had a much lower risk profile for cardiovascular problems, regardless of the amount of regular exercise they engaged in, than those with low levels of daily activity. This profile includes smaller waists, lower levels of potentially harmful blood fats, and lower glucose and clotting factor levels in men.

The same can be said for those who engaged in heavy formal exercise, but did not engage in routine physical activity very often. For their part, those who exercised regularly and were often physically active had the lowest risk profile of all. During the 12.5-year follow-up period, 476 of the participants had their first heart attack and 383 died of various causes.

The highest level of daily physical activity was associated with a 27 percent lower risk of heart attack or stroke and a 30 percent reduced risk of death from all causes, compared with the lowest level , regardless of how much regular, formal exercise was done as well.

“Our findings are particularly important for older adults, as people in this age group tend, compared to other groups, to spend relatively more of their daily activity doing routine activities because they often have difficulty achieving the intensity of exercise. recommended exercise levels,” the authors stress.

These experts suggest that the biological explanations for their findings could lie in energy expenditure: long sitting drives lower metabolism to a minimum, while it rises when physical activity increases. Muscle contractions can also provide some clues, since sitting does not require any muscular effort, disrupting the normal production of skeletal muscle hormones, with potential adverse effects on other organs and tissues in the body.
