Felt baby mobile step by step

We continue making things for babies, if a few days ago I showed you how to make a baby plank with magnetic vinyl and now it’s the last one’s turn felt mobile What have I done. Making a crib mobile or carousel is quite a laborious job, one of those that hours go by almost without realizing it, but when you see it finished it is worth all the time invested. In addition to being a decorative element, mobiles attract a lot of baby’s attention, especially if they have bright and cheerful colors like this one. hot air balloon felt mobile.

In this week’s newsletter I will include the template that I have used to make the different pieces of this mobile, you just have to be subscribed to the blog to receive it (it’s free!). Access here if you want to subscribe.

The materials that I have used to make this felt have been the following:

Felt pied.

Needle and thread.

Scissors (for these small things I usually use the curved nail scissors).

Foam for the filling (what I do is use the filling of an old cushion).

burlap fabric.

– A cardboard tube (the one I used is the one that comes inside the kitchen paper rolls).

White glue for crafts (which remains transparent once dry).

– Two sticks of wood for crafts (a few branches or a hanger can also work).

– Nail spikes round to tie the different parts of the mobile.

Once we have the materials, we get to work. to do the felt mobile balloon I followed the next steps:

1st.- we will trace the balloon pieces on the felt (do you know my trick to cut the felt without marking it?).

2nd.- we cut each piece combining the different colors of felt.

3º.- By stitching we sew the smallest piece to the medium.

4º.- With another stitch we sew the medium piece to the large one. You can do it the other way around (sewing the medium one to the big one and the small one to the other two), but this way you always pass the needle over two superimposed pieces of felt and not over three, which is more expensive (I made the first balloon like that and I got a blister on my finger).

5º.- Through scallop stitch We will join the front part of the balloon with the back part, leaving a small opening without sewing.

6º.- Through the opening that we have left, we will introduce the filling until the balloon is shaped.

7º.- Once filled we finish closing the balloon with the festoon stitch.

To make the clouds the process is exactly the same as the one for the balloons but to make the basket I used another “technique”, it could be done with felt but I didn’t like the effect since being small the filling didn’t fit and if I left it plane looked like a graceless pendant.

The steps I followed for the basket They were the following ones:

1º.- I used the inside of a roll of kitchen paper to make the base of the basket.

2nd and 3rd.- With a cutter I cut it to the desired size (it can also be cut with a knife or scissors).

4º.- I cut a rectangle of burlap fabric big enough to cover the cylinder of the basket and I spread it with white glue.

5º.- I glued the fabric to the cardboard cylinder and reinforced the joint with more white glue (once it dries it becomes transparent and nothing is noticeable).

6º.- We soak the interior of the cardboard cylinder with the glue and we put the excess of the fabric inside.

7º.- We give more glue so that the fabric is well attached.

8º.- So that the basket does not remain hollow, I placed a cotton ball.

Apart from the little clouds that go between the hot air balloons, I made a bigger one with the baby’s name to put on top of the felt mobile. In this case I did not sew the letters to the cloud but I glued them because they were small and they would not have been good with the stitching in sight.

To join the balloon, the basket and the clouds I made a crochet chain but if crochet is not your thing, you can also join it with a slightly thicker thread.

Finally, with a couple of wooden sticks joined at the center with thread and glue, I made the structure from which to hang the different parts of the mobile from the spikes that I placed at the ends.

In order for the mobile to be straight once it was hung from the ceiling and not twist, what I did was pass a thread through one of the right angles of the cross and vice versa, and another of the same size through the other two angles. Finally I joined them all in the cloud at the top.

Felt is not difficult to work with and you can create a lot of things with it like brooches, bags, mobile and tablet covers, bouquets (my bridal bouquet was felt) and of course you can also make colorful crib mobiles. you dare?
