coat rack with recycled wood

With recycled materials and a little creativity you can make unique objects to decorate your home or to give as gifts, proof of this is this coat rack with recycled wood that you can do yourself Do not miss this tutorial if you want to learn how to do it.

Looking at the cover photo, no one would say that the lid of a box found in the garbage, an iron coat rack with paint chipped off and some sheets of recycled paper are the materials I used to make a coat rack with recycled wood. Although it may seem incredible, with a little creativity you can get wonders from objects that nobody wants or that have deteriorated from use.

The recycled wood of the rack comes from the lid of a box used for batches of Christmas products, which I found next to a container. After removing nails, staples and wood studs, I sanded the entire surface, applied a walnut stain, sealed with carpenter’s glue, applied white acrylic paint, re-sanded and waxed. In the following link you will find how to make a stripped rustic board with step-by-step images.

To draw the silhouette of the girl I used the same technique that you will find in this link on how to make a painting with paper pens. First of all I printed the drawing with a laser printer. Next I transferred the image onto the wood with acetoneTo do this, place the printed part in contact with the wood and pass a cotton soaked in acetone, pressing several times so that the transfer is carried out correctly.

In the event that the image to be transferred has letters or phrases written on it, it will have to be inverted or printed using the mirror effect so that they can be read in the correct direction. In this case it was not necessary since it did not matter to me whether the hair ornament appeared on one side or the other.

Next I painted the body of the figure with acrylic paint in gold color. For the skirt I used recycled paper combining two different patterns: I painted one sheet of paper with gold spray paint and the other I decorated with a silicone stamp that imitates writing.

I finally cut paper pens of both patterns and adhered them to the board with double-sided tape.

To complete the decoration of the coat rack, I painted some gold and black stars using paper doilies as templates.

On the other hand, I do not have a photo of the iron coat rack of how it was before but, although it was not rusty, the red color of the paint had come off so I decided to spray paint it black forge.

Once the coat rack was finished, I gave it to my friend Maika, a photographer who has not only given it a useful life but is also the author of both the beautiful cover image and the one that can be seen below:

For me it has always been a personal satisfaction to be able to give objects and furniture a second chance, but when you also have the opportunity to see how someone welcomes it so that it becomes part of their life, the joy it gives me is immense. I don’t think there is a better gift than the one made from love and with your own hands. For those who receive it, it is not only an object, it is a part of you. For the one who gives it, it is a wish to make another person a little happier.
