How to make a felt phone case

On many occasions, a change of mobile phone also involves changing the case because it no longer fits the new model, however, sometimes it happens that you cannot find a new case that you like as much as the one you already had. For those cases, a good solution is to make one yourself. felt cover for mobile or customize one that you have bought.

Last week my boyfriend gave me a surprise, he gave me a new mobile. After the first moments of shock (I looked at it in my hand but did not assimilate that it was mine), I realized that I would have to buy a new case because the dimensions of the new phone did not match those of the old one. The truth is that I was quite sorry for him because I loved it and it would be hard for me to find one like it, so I thought of making it myself, after all, I had already made a tablet case before.

The mobile cover I had was made of silicone and what I liked the most about it was that it had a picture of a cute kitten printed on it.

In addition, it did not hide the screen of the phone, a detail that I consider important because I like to have immediate access to the screen without having to lift any cover or take out the phone.

So as not to overcomplicate myself I bought a cover of material similar to the one I already had, Although aesthetically it left a lot to be desired. I chose this model and not another because it was the only one that had a transparent side, the printed part was the least important to me because it was the one I was going to customize.

Then I looked for the image of a cat silhouette and traced it by placing parchment paper on the computer screen. I then cut out the pattern, placed it on a grayish felt sheet and cut out the silhouette.

Next I was inspired by my previous case to make the features of the cat’s face. To do this I cut out two small almond-shaped eyes from blue felt, with the hole punch I made two circles of black felt as pupils and joined both parts with white mouliné thread using French knot stitch (you can see how it is done in this link). Finally I embroidered the eyelashes, nose, mouth, inside of the ears and mustaches.

The next step was to place the black felt under the gray felt and topstitch around it with black mouliné thread. In homage to my cat Willy, who has been very talkative, I embroidered the word “meow” above his head with black mouliné thread.

To fix the felt to the casing I used double-sided tape, then I cut out the excess felt and the hole for the camera lens with scissors. I also stitched around it with black mouliné thread since, being the silicone shell, it could be sewn easily, in this way I made sure that the edges would not come off.

After all these steps I already had my new custom personalized mobile phone casejust how I wanted.
