How to renovate with spray paint

renovate with spray paint

Last Saturday I was in a couple of Optimus hardware stores doing a demonstration of everything that can be transformed with the different Novasol Spray product lines. A chair, a flowerpot, a microwave and even a rusty box are some of the objects that can be renovate with spray paint to give them a 2nd chance.

I love tuning, transforming and customizing so for me the idea of making a demonstration on how to paint with different types of spray paint. In the following images you can see some of the objects that I had to renew:

I couldn’t paint all of them (drying times had to be taken into account), but I did make some interesting transformations. One of them consisted of painting an orange ceramic pot and a white lantern or candle holder with gray and black wrought iron spray paint respectively. This type of paint is an epoxy enamel that serves as a primer and also protects against corrosion, making it ideal for use outdoors.

I particularly love the forge spray because it has a matte finish but with flashes of light difficult to reflect in an image, you have to see it live! It is not only an exterior paint, but can also be used to decorate objects and furniture. For example, I had previously used it to paint a wooden box:

And also for decorate the inside of these mason jars (in this link you will find the step by step to achieve this same effect):

Another of the objects that underwent a radical change was an old kitchen chair with metal legs and a melamine seat and back. The first thing I did was apply iron spray primer to the whole chair. Primers for metal surfaces improve paint adhesion and also protect against rust and increase the metal’s resistance to corrosion.

It is recommended that the primer dries completely before recoating (about 24 hours) but as I did not have that much time as it was a demo, what I did was wait for it to surface dry (about an hour).

To decorate the chair I used PintyPlus Evolution Acrylicspecifically an intense yellow and blue, two colors that according to Pantone are going to hit hard in 2016.

The Evolution product line is ultra fast drying (15 minutes total and 5 minutes repainting), so after applying several thin coats of spray paint (this is very important for a good result), the chair was rejuvenated a few decades . We didn’t take the “before” photo, but so that you can better see the transformation, I have looked for the image of a similar chair.

Another challenge of the day was recover a rusty metal box who had once been on a ship. It was in very poor condition, the rust had perforated the surface, so the first step was to sand it with a metal bristle brush.

Then I painted the entire surface with iron spray primer.

Since the metal box was pretty worn, there wasn’t much point in painting it like new because it just wouldn’t look new. I finally decided to change its “old rusty” look for a “vintage rusty” one, for which I used the product line PintyPlus Chalk Paint.

After giving a layer of glacé brown, I painted with the turquoise color on aluminum foil and transferred it to the box, thus creating a kind of stains that simulated oxidation. Later I will make a detailed step-by-step tutorial so that the technique can be better understood.

Another effect I did during the demo was how stain the wood with PintyPlus Chalk Paintin this way the wood is given a tone that, at the same time, reveals the grain and highlights it.

There was also no lack christmas touch so typical of these dates, for this I painted several wooden stars and pineapples with chalk paint spray.

The colors I used were stone, indigo blue, ash gray and lead black.

The result was beautiful even on the cement floor.

This microwave also underwent an amazing transformation with PintyPlus Evolution Acrylic, went from being the typical white range appliance to a personalized vintage-style microwave. In the Shaking Colors blog you have all the photos of the step by step.

By the way, the spray gun was great for me because after several hours painting my finger ran out of strength to press the spray can button (in this link you will find more tips and tricks for spray painting).

In the following image you can see how the microwave turned out once the paint had dried and after removing the bodybuilder’s tape.

I painted some more objects like photo frames, a wooden box and even a lamp with its shade. The truth is that some transformations surprised even me and have inspired new projects that are going to be added to the to-do list.

Did you know the different lines of products that exist for renovate with spray paint? Have you ever tried them? How was your experience? Personally, I think that spray painting has its advantages in disadvantages, although it offers a finish that can hardly be achieved using a brush or roller.
