Today we bring you a project of woodworking diy. On this occasion we are going to show how to plan to make a shelf and what types of joints to use. Versatile and very useful piece of furniture in any home.
It can be done in almost any type of wood: chipboard, MDF (commonly known as MDF), plywood, and even solid wood from any of the countless species existing.
the dimensions of the shelving are the following:
Height 1,976 mm.
Width 654mm.
Depth (bottom) 400 mm.
The thickness of the board that we will use is 18 mm.
In order to better guide us throughout the construction and assembly process, we have assigned a letter to the different pieces.
A highly recommended practice when carrying out a project of diy It is, before doing anything, to put the project on paper by making a plan of the work that we have in mind including all the measurements and, if it is made up of many pieces, assigning a letter or a number to each one of them. Only then will you avoid mistakes.
List of Materials that we will need:
- 2 pieces of 1,976 mm long X 400 mm wide. (Part A)
- 1 piece of 1,890 mm long X 396 mm wide. (Part B)
- 10 pieces of 396 mm long X 300 mm wide. (Part C)
- 2 pieces of 618 mm long X 400 mm wide. (Part D)
- 2 pieces 618 mm long X 50 mm wide. (Part E)
The first step is to make the structure of the piece of furniture per se. Once done, we add the shelves.
The shelves are anchored with double plastic brackets with lids. In this way the screws are hidden by the cover.
When installing the shelves with this type of joints, the sides of the furniture are free of screws (only the ones on the top and bottom will be visible, since they are part of the structure). In this way we improve the aesthetics of the piece of furniture.
However, we can always use the following “trick”: sink the screws a little into the wood and fill the hole with carpenter’s wax. In this way, the screws are completely invisible. This type of wax is sold in an infinite number of colours, so that it can be combined with a lot of types of wood.
Below we include the plans of each of the parts with all the necessary measurements for its realization.

To begin with, we will have to use for these guides a color similar, if not identical, to that of the wood that we have used for piece of furniture. Only in this way, despite being visible, will they go practically unnoticed.
