The different types of pool covers

Tipos de cubiertas para piscinas - destacada

Now that the end of the swimming pool and bathing season is approaching, we have seen fit to write this article.

In it we will see how to prepare our pool to keep the water until the next season, which implies a series of advantages that we will see throughout the article.

I am referring to the different types of tarpaulins and pool covers, which can range from isothermal summer covers to telescopic ones.

The material that is usually used for the manufacture of this type of cover is usually polypropylene, open mesh, as well as solid polyethylene.

Let’s see them.

isothermal cover

We will start with one of the simplest, the isothermal covers. Basically it is plastic tarps with air bubbles.

Its use is mainly intended for the bathing season. Although it can also protect the pool, to a certain extent, from environmental dust, leaves, insects, and dirt of this type, its main function is to preserve and increase the temperature of the pool water.

Being made of low-density polyethylene, it produces a greenhouse effect that makes the aforementioned increase in temperature possible.

As in any consumer item, there are different qualities and thicknesses.

They range from approximately 375 gr/m2 with a thickness of 400 microns, to about 560 gr/m2 with a thickness of 700 microns.

Depending on this aspect, an increase in water temperature of between 7 and 10 degrees Celsius can be achieved.

Another advantage of isothermal covers is that they considerably reduce water evaporation, with the consequent economic savings that this can mean throughout the entire summer season.

tonneau cover

The canvas pool cover is made of PVC fabric, with an approximate weight of 600gr/m2, and is resistant to tearing.

It is equipped, along the edges, with eyelets in which the adjustable tensioners are anchored. They also have drains to allow the passage of rainwater.

The main purpose of the canvas covers is to protect the pool from branches, leaves and any type of dirt, as well as to conserve the water in the pool during the rest of the year. Which allows us to forget about performing any type of maintenance, since they do not require any action on our part.

In this sense, they provide several advantages.

Economic savings

On the one hand, the economic savings of eliminating at a stroke the use of chemical products to keep the water in good condition.

And on the other, energy savings and, therefore, economics, by not having to periodically use the water filtering system.

Time saving

We must not forget that it also saves time, in addition to giving us peace of mind by not having to be aware of taking measurements of certain water levels, such as the PH.

safety covers

The purpose of the safety covers, like the canvas covers or, also called, winter covers, is to keep the water during the winter.

But it also has a second objective, of great importance. Which is to prevent accidental drowning.

Within the security covers there are several systems.

bar covers

As its name suggests, it consists of a canvas cover, reinforced with metal bars along the length of the pool.

Within the security covers, this system is one of the most economical.

This model can be fitted with a winding system, either automatic or manual (with a crank).

shutter covers

Shutter covers are a very good alternative, both for maintaining water, as well as for retaining temperature and reducing evaporation.

The box where it is rolled up is seen, on the surface of the ground, or buried at ground level.

The latter has an automatic system for deployment and collection. The first can be manually operated (with a crank) or automatically.

The cover that is buried, is completely invisible when it is collected.

telescopic covers

Finally, we have the telescopic covers, and they are more than just pool covers, a solarium-type enclosure that covers the pool.

This passenger compartment has the option of retracting by means of a motorized system, for the hottest days. Or with the cover unfolded to take pleasant baths on less hot days.
